ADULT CONFIRMATION FOR BAPTIZED ADULT CATHOLICS

If you are a baptized adult Catholic that has not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation (and/or First Holy Communion and First Penance), we encourage you to complete your Sacraments of Initiation.

Adults who were baptized as Catholics but have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation (and/or the Sacraments of First Penance and First Holy Communion) have a few options in the Diocese of Santa Rosa.

I. Notes for Parish Adult Confirmation Coordinators

A. A baptized Catholic who is not fully initied needs to receive Confirmation and/or Holy Communion.  The following notes should be kept in mind:

Note 1.  Their marital status (including marital status of the spouse) needs to be determined and, if there is a nullty case, it needs to be submitted to the Tribunal.

Note 2.  They are not RCIA candidates.

Note 3. Confirmation and/or First Holy Communion should be entered in parish Confirmation register.  The parish is to inform the church of baptism of the Confirmation of the person.

Note 4.  Choices of where the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion received are (a) at the Cathedral on Pentecost Sunday, (b) from the Bishop when he comes for Confirmation at the parish, or (c) provided the priest receives delegation from the Bishop, at the parish on Pentecost Sunday or some other Sunday but NOT on the Easter Vigil. 

 

B. Adult Confirmation Coordinators may assist their pastors in completing the Diocesan "RCIA Standard In-Take Form."  The completed form should be returned to the Office of the Judicial Vicar in a timely manner.

C. The parish should provide suitable catechesis so that a baptized adult Catholic can complete the Sacraments of Initiation.  The parish Adult Confirmation Coordinator should provide formation in the following 4 pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the formation:

1. Profession of Faith (Creed)

2. Seven Sacraments

3. Moral Life in Christ (including the 10 Commandments)

4. Christian Prayer (especially the Lord's Prayer)

 

D. The parish should provide First Penance, if not yet received, at least one time.  The Department of Religious Education offers the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the annual retreat as an option.

 

E. The Department of Religious Education will offer a retreat for baptized adult Catholics preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmaton. 

 

F. The parish should provide First Penance, if not yet received, at least one time before the Sacrament of Confirmation.  The Department of Religious Education offers the Sacrament of Reconciliation during an annual retreat as an option.
