SPEAKERS
MONICA ASHOUR, MTS, M.HUM.
Holding two Masters from the University of Dallas — one in Theological Studies and one in Humanities – Monica Ashour is an international speaker, author of 28 books, President and Director of Content Creation for the Theology of the Body Evangelization Team, known as TOBET. Named in 2010 by the Catholic National Register as one of the top six speakers on Saint John Paul’s seminal work known as the Theology of the Body, Monica and her team have completed a pre-school through 8th-grade program called The Body Matters for schools, faith formation, and family catechesis. It has been called a “game-changer.”
Monica was awarded by the Catholic Press Association for Honorable Mention—First Time Author of a Book, Everybody Has Something to Give. She also received the Excellence in Publishing Award for Children’s Books for her Every BODY Has a Body: God Made Us to Love, from her series called ToB for Kids for 4-7 year-olds and ToB for Tots for 2-5 year-olds, (Pauline Books and Media). Monica and her team wrote the Theology of the Body Marriage Preparation program, lauded by Cardinal Dolan of New York and Archbishop Aquila in Denver. Available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese, this marriage prep program is used throughout the nation.
In May 2015, Miss Ashour was a participant for an ad hoc committee in Washington DC for the Pontifical Council for the Family. In November 2011, Monica presented a talk “Teaching TOB to Teens” at the Theology of the Body International Symposium in Rome. She was also a participant in the International Summit on Lay Leadership with Cardinal Arinze in Rome.
Before becoming an international speaker, Monica served as a campus minister at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Texas A&M University from 1996 to 1999. There she launched the now nationwide Nun Run, in which young women travel around the nation visiting convents. Before and after her stint at St. Mary’s, Monica enjoyed 20 years teaching theology and literature in grade school and high school classrooms. Monica was the recipient of Bishop (now Cardinal) Farrell’s 2008 Pro-Life Award for Civic Action and was named to the Hall of Fame for her alma mater, Nolan Catholic High School in Ft. Worth. Monica enjoys discussion groups, exercise, bridge, and coaching softball.
SR MARY VIANNEY, MSSR
Sister Mary Vianney is a member of the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa, the Diocesan religious community founded by Bishop Vasa in 2012. Sister entered the Marian Sisters in 2014, made her First Profession of Vows in 2016 and is scheduled to make her Perpetual Profession of Vows in November, 2020. The charism of the Marian Sisters is to magnify Jesus Christ in union with Our Lady by communicating the Beauty, Goodness, and Truth of the Catholic faith in a spirit of joyful evangelization through living the fullness of the Church's liturgical life. Sister Mary Vianney lives out this charism in the apostolate as the Director of the Catholic Schools Faith Formation Office and serving her community as Assistant Vocations Directress and Assistant Postulant Mistress. She holds a Master of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.
JOHN W. GALTEN
John is a husband, father and grandfather & Catholic educator who has taught for 46 years from 6th grade to adults. He also gives retreats & conferences on the thought of St. John Paul II. He is supposed to be retired but, alas, he cannot lay the hammer down.
MARY BETH BONACCI
Mary Beth Bonacci first learned about St. John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body” shortly after he concluded the original series of talks in 1985. She was enthralled, and within a year she became one of the first speakers to address the topic on a national level. For the next twenty years, she traveled full time throughout the country and around the world, speaking to audiences about chastity and the beauty of the Church’s teaching on human sexuality.
She is the founder of Real Love, Inc., an organization dedicated to promoting respect for God’s gift of human sexuality. Her book Real Love has been translated into ten languages and has now been completely revised and updated. She is also the author of We’re on a Mission from
God, and writes a regular syndicated column with appears in the Denver Catholic. Her educational video, Sex and Love: What’s a Teenager to Do? was awarded the Crown Award for best youth curriculum. In 1993 she spoke to 75,000 people at World Youth Day in Denver, Colorado; and in 1999, she spoke to 22,000 at the TWA Dome during the Pope’s visit to St. Louis.
Mary Beth is a Denver native who grew up at St. Bernadette Parish in Lakewood. Since she retired from full-time speaking in 2005, she has worked as a real estate agent with RE/MAX Alliance, where she was recently inducted into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame.
GABRIEL & CAROLA EGUSQUIZA
Gabriel ha estado involucrado en las actividades de la iglesia desde muy joven. Comenzó como
catequista para el grupo juvenil de la Parroquia La Encarnación, en Lima, Perú. Ha participado
en viajes misioneros durante varios años con sacerdotes franciscanos. Gabriel estudió
Laboratorio Clínico y Terapia Física, carreras que le abrieron las puertas del Hospital South
Western en Dallas, donde trabajó durante varios años como flebotomista para una
investigación de enfermedades cardíacas. Gabriel también se sintió motivado para impactar
positivamente en su comunidad al fundar la Asociación Peruana de Dallas Fort Worth (APDFW)
en 2002, una organización sin fines de lucro que trabaja para promover la integración de las
culturas hispana y estadounidense. Por sus esfuerzos y liderazgo en la APDFW, ha sido invitado
a la Casa Blanca en tres ocasiones para ser parte de las celebraciones de la Herencia Hispana.
Carola recibió su educación en María Auxiliadora, una escuela católica en Lima, Perú de la
congregación Salesiana, Fundada en Italia por San Juan Bosco. Carola estuvo inmersa en grupos
marianos y misioneros en la escuela. Obtuvo el título de Asociado en Crecimiento y Desarrollo
Infantil en el Colegio Comunitario en Dallas; trabajó 7 años para el programa sin fines de lucro
ECI (Intervención Temprana en la Infancia) donde fue Especialista Bilingüe de Relaciones
Públicas. Muralista independiente, ha pintado murales para niños en tres clínicas de WIC
(Clínicas para Mujeres, Bebés y Niños) en Dallas, Irving y Carrollton Texas. Junto a su esposo
Gabriel, ahora administran su propio negocio en Dallas.
Desde su llegada a los Estados Unidos en 1995, Gabriel y Carola Egusquiza han estado
continuamente involucrados en programas de evangelización juntos. Durante 10 años, sirvieron
como facilitadores de FOCCUS, un programa diseñado para brindar preparación prenupcial a las
parejas comprometidas. También han recibido preparación en los “Talleres de Oración y Vida”
(TOV) fundados por el Padre Ignacio Larrañaga donde fueron facilitadores para no solo
aprender a orar sino utilizar diferentes formas de escuchar a Dios en la oración. Descubrieron
TOBET en 2015 cuando asistieron a una presentación en su parroquia dada por Monica Ashour,
quien les ofreció una nueva oportunidad de evangelizar al ser parte del equipo de TOBET.
Desde ahí han dado charlas de preparación matrimonial para parejas de novios, padres y
educadores. Gabriel y Carola tienen 3 hijas, dos jóvenes adultas y una pequeña niña que llegó
como un regalo de Dios durante el tiempo de su descubrimiento de la Teología del Cuerpo.
JOANNA BRUNET
Joanna vivió su infancia en México y la mayor parte de su vida la ha vivido en Texas. Tiene una
licenciatura en Ingeniería Industrial de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso y educación de
postgrado de la Universidad de Dallas. Su carrera profesional es diversa y ha trabajado como
ingeniero industrial, propietaria de un restaurante, educadora, tutora y agente inmobiliario. En
el año 2010, comenzó a aprender sobre la Teología del Cuerpo la cual transformó su vida
personal y profesional. Por esta razón tiene un gran entusiasmo por vivir, estudiar y compartir la
Teología del Cuerpo con los demás.
Ha enseñado TDC a niños de primaria y secundaria. Ella ha utilizado los planes de estudio de
TOBET the "Body Matters" los cuales ha implementado exitosamente en la escuela con sus estudiantes y también en la educación en casa. En este momento, Joanna forma parte del
equipo que está traduciendo the "Body Matters" al español. Ella apoya a su comunidad y a otras parroquias al compartir la Teología del Cuerpo, la inestimable contribución de San Juan Pablo II al mundo, dando charlas, presentaciones y educando a otros sobre esta visión que transforma vidas. Ella es una ávida estudiante que continúa profundizando y estudiando sobre la TDC a través de la valiosa educación y tutoría de TOBET y del Instituto de la Teología del Cuerpo.
Le gusta crear recetas, pasar tiempo con la familia y amigos, leer y correr. Pero su pasatiempo
favorito son las actividades al aire libre con sus sobrinos y enseñarles sobre la Teología del
Cuerpo.
KARINA BARBA
Karina Barba es colombiana y vive en Bogotá con su esposo Carlos. Son padres de Simona (10),
Mariana (4), Lucía (10 meses) y tres hijos más que ya están en el cielo. Ingeniera Civil con
Maestría en Ingeniería de Petróleo y Gas, trabajó durante 7 años en la industria petrolera.
Cuando Karina estaba en la universidad, hizo trabajo voluntario con varios amigos en hogares
para niños abandonados.
Catequista desde 2008, la Sra. Barba ha servido a la Iglesia Católica en Escocia, Venezuela y
Colombia. Ha conducido programas de radio para estaciones católicas enfocados en temas pro-
vida y de familia.
Su encuentro con la Teología del Cuerpo se produjo a través de una búsqueda personal después
de la pérdida de su bebé por nacer. Así es como un día le llamó la atención un libro,
Espiritualidad conyugal de San Juan Pablo II; era el año 2014 y desde entonces no ha dejado de
estudiarla.
Karina ha trabajado como profesora de Religión en escuelas católicas de primaria y secundaria
asimismo como profesora universitaria de formación humana donde comparte con sus
estudiantes reflexiones en torno a las enseñanzas de San Juan Pablo II; antropología, castidad,
sexualidad, dignidad humana, moral cristiana, razón y fe, gracia y libertad, dolor y sufrimiento;
son temas que trata en sus clases.
También es colaboradora activa de los Centros de Protección al Embarazo para madres en
riesgo de aborto. Ha impartido retiros y conferencias a jóvenes, padres de familia y personas
consagradas. Karina es nuestra conferencista de los seminarios TOBET en español y también
hace parte del equipo de traducción al español del currículo de The Body Matters.
