During our recent essay contest, teachers shared heartfelt reflections on the impact of Catholic education. Congratulations to Michelle Momsen from St. Francis Solano School, who beautifully expressed the heart of teaching: "I am carrying out Jesus' mission of bringing children to God by working at a Catholic school. This is my vocation."
Her journey from student to teacher at the same school reflects the lasting influence of faith-based education. We are grateful for the dedication of Catholic school teachers who shape young hearts and minds with faith, love, and wisdom.
My Vocation to Teach in a Catholic School By Michelle Momsen, St. Francis Solano School
Ever since I was a student at St Francis Solano School, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. As I grew and attended both a Catholic high school and college, I knew not only did I want to teach at a Catholic school, but at St. Francis Solano School itself. Almost thirty years later, here I am! I love being able to talk to students about Jesus. I can’t imagine being in a school where the day doesn’t begin with prayer. I love watching our students lead a Mass, take part in a nativity scene, put their shoes out for St. Nick, participate in the First Communion Luncheon. There is a special sacred feeling as our 8th graders walk up the aisle in their gowns on Baccalaureate Mass. I am a holier person during the school year than I am during summer. Praying with the students, teaching religion, and participating in the Mass with them makes me a better Catholic. Each teacher has a unique teaching style and personality, but our camaraderie with each other and our students is all based on loving as Jesus loved. We all have the same goal of making sure each child and family is treated with dignity and respect. I truly feel that I was called by God at a very young age to teach at a Catholic school, and am blessed to have been able to teach at my alma mater. I am carrying out Jesus’ mission of bringing children to God by working at a Catholic school. This is my vocation.
