Several of you have reached out to me asking how you may support the victims of the wildfires on Maui. The following link leads to an appeal for donations from Bishop Larry Silva. Please distribute it as you see fit.
https://www.catholichawaii.org/media/651349/maui-wildfire-donation-letter.pdf We are working with our Maui coordinators to determine the needs for Maria Lanakila Catholic Church’s religious education program and Sacred Hearts, her parish school. Part of the monetary donations will go towards helping to resupply teachers and students with necessary resources. It is difficult to fully describe the complete devastation of Lahaina and parts of Kula in upcountry Maui. Two-thirds of the burn zone is yet to be searched by forensic experts so we know the death toll will continue to rise. Yet miraculously, Maria Lanakila Church (Our Lady of Victory) was untouched by fire! Other than ash on the pews, there is no fire damage – even the front lawn grass is still green… It is as though our Blessed Mother threw her cloak of protection over the church - a sure sign that we must continue do all we can to be a beacon of hope in Christ for the community. Peace to all, Jayne Ragasa-Mondoy, M.A. Director Office of Faith Formation Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu
